Lighting and Set Design

Two music videos in particular influenced us heavily during our research. One being Telana's "Gemini", which used a flowing array of pinks and purple from a projector to achieve an interesting 3D effect. The other being AlunaGeorge's "Just A Touch" which focuses solely on the artists by using an 'infinity code' backdrop effect by blasting light onto a white stage, making the artists the only visible thing on screen.

Luckily, our school has a fully equipped studio, which includes a top range lighting desk, around 30 powerful lights, a green/white/black screen and ample floor space for a mid scale performance to take place. In order to exploit this fully, we had a technical test for tryinh out different camera angles and lighting setups. We could then save ur favourite lighting setups onto the desk, ready for the next time we use it.

Below are an assortment of different photos of us testing our technical skills and getting used to the studio:

We trialed various different colour setups

In order to properly review the footage we captured in the test session, we created a short video:

Ultimately, the ideas acquired from Telana's video came to be too hard to implement properly. Using a projector wouldn't sync well with any other shot type that we had in mind and getting a colour scheme that wasn't either white or black proved nearly impossible to get sharp enough.

However, sticking with the ideas acquired from AlunaGeorge, a white and black backdrop used to create an infinity code gave a very professional and sharp look. The only challenge with using this lighting setup was attempting to balance the light intensity so that Vivian didn't appear too dark and Josh didn't appear too whitewashed.
